Choosing and Coordinating your outfits is key in planning a perfect portrait session.
Deciding what to wear for your families photo shoot is hard! Picking the right prints and colors to make sure your pictures turn out perfect is a grueling task. So when choosing what to wear, try to follow these four simple guidelines I give clients when selecting outfits.
1. Matching perfectly is no longer the trend.
When choosing outfits for your spouse, children, or even parents, try not to put the exact same color and print on everyone. While this may have been done in many a photo shoot, it is not always the best route to take. It is better to blend a color family together and stick to simple prints. Try deciding on a color, and branch out a bit from just one or two shades.
2. Incorporate complimentary colors.
When using primary colors (i.e. Red, Blue, and Yellow) try to stay in that color family. Primary colors look best as a statement color and are better by themselves. When you incorporate complimentary colors, you'd be surprised by what colors work well together. Pair blues with violets, or yellows with a bold turquoise. Doing this can give you color diversity in your photos, but it all ties together neatly, with a clean look in the end.
3. Prints can work, but try to limit them.
Prints are great. They can be very alluring to the cameras eye during your shoot, but using more than one print on different people gets confusing and too busy for the eye to look at. If you have a nice printed dress perhaps use that as an inspiration for other solid outfits. Stripes however, are good to avoid, they are too bold and overpowering. Prints should be subtle and softer. Using one color as a centerpiece for a top or for bottoms is a good idea when wearing black or neutral colors.
4. Where will your portrait be displayed?
Consider your decor in the room you plan to hang your wall portrait. You should consider making decisions to compliment your room design. Avoid trendy themes and choose colors that will be timeless.
Try following these points when you prepare for your session! Learning how pair and color outfits can be what really brings your photo together. For a wide range of suggestions on how to dress check Lisa Carter Photography's What to Wear Pinterest page.
